9:07 pm - Married
Well, we're married now. I like it a lot. We eat breakfasts and dinners together.

I wanna thank all of you friends who have offered encouragement and support. Especial thanks to contributors to our Date Book. We are looking forward to coasting on y'alls ideas for a while. :-) I'm excited about Western Buddy day. We'll have to visit Retro Revolution to pick up an official thrifty Western Buddy for Eric.

We are completely moved into our apartment now.
That's all for now!

Thanks sabrinanymph. These results were just too amusing for me to pass.  It's true.  I am going to give some statistics to charity!  By the way Kajagoogoo is a band from the eighties that included Nick Beggs.

In 2008, lvelyrita resolves to...
Go to the nick beggs every month.
Give some statistics to charity.
Put fifty non-profit organizations a month into my savings account.
Get back in contact with some old spiders.
Cut down on my reasoning.
Connect with my inner kajagoogoo.
Get your own New Year's Resolutions:

3:18 pm - Hello, Ronnie.
Hello, Ronnie.

My working day is rather boring now, since I finished up a big project last week. I still have a heck of a lot to do; it just isn't as interesting.  Today I plan to engage in some finger painting fun, when I get home from work. What joy!

My current reading list includes: Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card, Not on Our Watch by Don Cheadle and Jon Pendergast, Con$umed by Benjamin R. Barber, and The Sacred Way by Tony Jones.  Naturally, I'm not doing a very good job of reading all of these at once.  Eric and I are reading Ender's Game together and soon we will start The Sacred Way because we are joining a Sunday school class at Revolution.  Isn't that cute?  The other two I'm trying to read on my own.  Eric has already finished Not on Our Watch.

Well, I need to get back to some very dull report making.

Love,
Jones

1:44 pm - Westport Coffee House Stabbing
"Westport Brawl Leaves Several People Hurt KANSAS CITY, Mo. - A brawl near 40th and Westport involving a shovel injured several people Monday afternoon." - KCTV5

I heard that a friend of mine was stabbed outside the Westport Coffee House. Check out KCTV5's news clip. I know the lady that they refer to as a "mediator" in the fight.

KCTV9 had this to say:

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- At least two people were injured in a reported stabbing Monday afternoon, officials said.

The stabbing appeared to have stemmed from an argument near the Westport Coffee House on Pennsylvania Avenue, police said.

The two victims are expected to recover, officials said.

The attacker fled the scene, but police said they took him into custody about an hour later.

12:39 pm - MSNBC Reports: As death increases, compassion recedes
"Study finds mass death fails to spur emotion the way one tragedy can."

"The studies ... suggest a disturbing psychological tendency," Slovic said. "Our capacity to feel is limited. Even at two, people start to lose it."

Maybe, does compassion decline as we feel increasingly helpless? Do larger numbers of people cause us to feel more removed from the situation? Is it a case where we can identify with one person, because each of us is one person, but two or more people are a different kind of entity all together?

For me, I attribute my jaded heart to that helpless feeling. In my line of work, I deal with a lot of charities (FYI, I offer strategic advice for communicating with donors). I am overwhelmed when I picture all of my clients as a group, but sometimes, like today, I am moved by testimonies about how an organization like Food for the Poor impacts suffering children in Haiti.

What to do about it all? Well, my advice to non-profit orgs is to share personal stories about individuals. Show a picture of a single orphan, not a mass grave. Our minds just can't grasp mass death! My advice to the individual (myself) is to not allow one's mind to shut out the scary and unnatural, but to acknowledge that massive evils exist. These evils affect individuals just like you (still talking to myself here). Also, they are caused by individuals - who should be confronted and stopped (thinking specifically of Darfur etc, not tsunami). Next, then, is the challenge of finding opportunities to make an impact. And I'm overwhelmed again.

6:49 pm - The Scene of the Crime
And now I will tell y'all one extra special reason for wanting this doggie.

Wednesday morning, at some undetermined time between 7:42AM and 12:19PM, an intruder violated my dwelling space. I came home for lunch at the aforementioned 12:19PM and found that my deadbolt had been the victim of a heavy blow. I immediately phoned the office, and management promised to send someone right over. Now, promise me friends, that when you find your deadbolt mangled, you will not enter your domicile, but will wait for assistance. That would have been the wise thing to do. As for my part, curiosity took over and I went in anyway. The bolt was locked and so was the door knob.

I stood in my living room and looked around. My computer was still in place and stuff looked pretty normal. I figured the criminal attempt must have been diverted. I dialed a friend and began to leave him a voice mail b/c I had something to say. As I talked, I walked into the bedroom. The voice mail became a narration of what I found there.

"Hi, this is Jones. Hey... uh... someone... broke into my apartment today, like just now, this morning. I don't know if anything is missing yet, but they opened my fire box and scattered my savings bonds around. It looks like everything is still here. Oh, they went through my closet and my drawers too. Wow. Well, that's not really the reason I called...."

The rest of the story isn't very interesting. Maintenance man was shocked and alarmed. I went to the office and we called the po-lice. I went back to my apartment and waited a long time for Mr. Police Ocifer. He came and decided there were no good surfaces for fingerprinting. He determined that he couldn't find any on the fire box. We learned that the dead bolt on the back door was completely busted, so that's where the intruder entered. I'm glad that the person did not shatter the glass in my door. My birds would have suffered from the draft.

Speaking of those birdies, they're not talking! They refused to give Mr. Police Ocifer a description. That's why I should get a cute doggie like Anastasia. She would have told the bugger to stay away and I bet *insert gender neutral pronoun here* would have left well enough alone.

Unfortunately, I'm not going to try to get a dog. I'm sure that the Doberman Rescue group requires adopters to have a fenced yard or something stodgy like that. Also, it's well known that I do not have the time to keep a pet that requires more than feeding time. This makes me sad. I wish I could keep a dobie. They are my favorite dogs anywhere, ever. I miss my girls Inge, Misty, Cassie and Tina.

And that is why my apartment is now affectionately referred to as "The Scene of the Crime."

4:55 pm - Merry Christmas Warning Label
Yesterday Mum received a Christmas present from Dad. It was a small aluminum step stool, thirteen inches tall. The "Set up Procedures" label was somewhat amusing because it advises "before each use, check the condistion of all parts, including rivets, to insure that the Step Stool is in good condition and can be safely used." I cannot imagine checking each and every rivet before each use! That advice is nothing noteworthy as it is, but then the absurdity of the warning label on this little Step Stool magnifies my amusement with the set up proceedures.

/!\ Warning /!\
1. Always wear ANSI approved safety goggles when working with tools and equipment.
2. Do not allow children or animals to climb on the Step Stool.
3. Do not exceed the 330 Lb. maximum weight capacity.
4. Inspect the Step Stool before every use.
5. Do not use the product if it has structural defects; properly tag with "Do Not Use" and withdraw from service.
6. Carry Step Stool parallel to the ground.
7. Use only for the purpose for which the Step Stool was designed.
8. Barricade traffic areas in vicinity of Step Stool use. Lock, barricade or guard doorways in which a Step Stool is placed.
9. Never use the Step Stool as a ladder.
10. RISK OF ELECTRICAL SHOCK; never use the step stool around live electrical equipment.
11. When standing on the Step Stool, always have both feet in contact with the Step Stool.
12. Do not overextend sideways.
13. Use belt buckle rule: keep your belt buckle positioned between the side rails of the Step Stool at all times, which should maintain your center of gravity between the side rails at all times. (allow me to remind you that the Step Stool is only thirteen inches tall and has no side rails)
14. Wear rubber-soled shoed when using the Step Stool.

11:05 pm - Hoveyware
I have a cousin. He makes beautiful, intricate sculptures out of silverware. Check out the bearded dragon! My other favorite statues are his cranes. Visit his website to see the full gallery: www.hoveyware.com. He made a large wolf statue that used over 1,000 forks for the fur.

8:03 am - Yesterday
Funny thing... That flyer that Ana gave us advertising the Jay Farrar concert was actually from LAST YEAR! We did not get to see Son Volt afterall. But we did see The Elders give a free concert at City Market. That was awesome! We also went to a Japan Festival at one of the community colleges. And we watched X3.

Now for today... time to work!

6:55 pm - Update
Bunches of changes have happened recently. I moved to a different apartment complex. The most annoying part about that was paying $75 to have my electric meter read so that I can have electricity from the silly Board of Public Utilities. That's totally lame. The privatized Power & Light Co that handled the county I lived in before did NOT charge me a "connection fee." One cool thing is that my living room is painted turquoise. That's left over from the last tenant, I'm too lazy to paint.

Work is really busy right now b/c one of my co-workers is out this week (and maybe longer?!). He pitched a softball this weekend and the batter hit a hard line drive straight back at him. He caught it in his eye socket. The doc says that Co-worker will keep his eye and probably doesn't need surgery. He's going to get evaluated by a plastic surgeon tomorrow.

Church is cool. I'm going to one in midtown now. I had attended one in the suburbs for a couple years, but I want to make more city friends. It's great. And there are bunches of friendly people. They're teaching me how to be friendly.

I wanted to have a party a week from Sunday, but some of my new friends from church are already planning a birthday party for someone else that day. I might have my party anyway. My party will involve bunches of pumpkins.

My birthday is Monday. I think that I'll celebrate on Sunday. I want to tour the Thomas Hart Benton home. It's near midtown, within walking distance of church. Erika and I have been meaning to do that all year and we haven't gotten around to it yet. Sunday night is the Son Volt concert. I'm looking forward to seeing Jay Farrar. I've never seen him before. I'm also nervous b/c his tour dates on the website don't list 10/8, so I'm just going off of a flyer that Ana gave Erika.

5:48 pm - Black Crowes Dump Weird Ol' Ed?!
No Way!

Hawrysch was "released" from the rock band because of "personal issues," according to a statement issued Monday by the group's publicist, Mitch Schneider.

Read the snip-it on USA Today.

They are going to tour soon, but without Eddie. Sad day.

9:32 am - Foolhearty Jones
I did something stupid yesterday. Here's the story...

My company particpates in Corporate Challenge, which is a two month long olympic type event for local companies. My company is small, so we are in division H. My coworker Jill was signed up to run the 800 meter (1/2 mile) race last night, but family stuff came up at the last minute so she couldn't. Neither could her sub Emily. Neither could Emily's next-up Malia. Neither could Malia's next up Katie. So... I did it. At four o'clock in the afternoon, after having a huge lunch at Chili's and drinking a Coke Blak, I agreed to run in the 7:15 pm race. I hadn't even been JOGGING in over a year! I don't run.

Anyway. I did survive, barely. My time was 3:57. I was third in my division, but I don't get a medal b/c they only give those to the top three across all divisions. The most amusing part is that I threw up my super tasty lunch and it was not so tasty the second time around.
